Program Description

Event Details

The St. Louis Insane Asylum often confined women who resisted societal norms, a common and tragic reality.

Dr. Kathleen Nigro examines the role of Spiritualism in St. Louis, shedding light on its influence on women's treatment at the St. Louis Insane Asylum, inspired by Kate Chopin's The Awakening.

Dr. Nigro was the director of the Gender Studies program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The focus of her research included gender and the Civil War, women and witchcraft, gender and the environment, as well as literature studies in Young Adult literature, Holocaust literature, and nineteenth-century literature.
