John C. Frémont, legendary in the 1840s and 1850s as the “Pathfinder of the West,” commanded the Union Army’s Western Department from headquarters in St. Louis in 1861. His 100 days in command were marked by controversy, which ultimately led to his firing in November 1851. Learn how Frémont’s wife Jessie – the daughter of Missouri Sen. Thomas Hart Benton – interceded to protect her husband’s position and legacy. Learn what they did together to advance the cause of emancipation, more than a year before Abraham Lincoln was ready to follow suit.
